Mercury-Free Thermostat Exchange
Is your home thermostat digital? If not, it is probably a mercury-controlled thermostat. Covanta SEMASS, in their efforts to keep mercury out of the waste cycle, has donated a number of programmable and non-programmable digital thermostats to the Landing. You are welcome to come take a thermostat home, replace your old mercury-controlled one, and bring it back to the Landing for pickup and disposal by Covanta.
These thermostats retail for $25 for the non-programmable and $50 for the programmable. We suggest a $5 donation.
Why should you replace your old thermostat? To keep mercury out of the environment. Why would Covanta provide free thermostats? They have strict mercury-emission standards. They pay fines if their mercury emissions are over those standards. It makes financial sense for them to keep mercury out of the waste stream, and they have started public outreach education with that goal in mind. They have already partnered with us on our Cleanup day.
