The Jones River suffers from lack of flow and poor water quality. About 10 million gallons is diverted from the watershed every day to Brockton for water supply. Other withdrawels for cranberries and lawn watering deplete flow in the river. This causes low flow in the upper reach of the river. In addition, lawn and agricultural chemicals and road run-off contribute to high nutrients and warm temperatures that degrade the river's natural condition.
In addition to river quality, the Jones River is impaired by old dams which prevent flushing and the migration of fish. Dams cause sediments to accumulate thereby increasing nutrients, raising water tempurature, encouraging weed growth, and lowering dissolved oxygen. Without cool water and adequate oxygen levels, many native fish cannot survive.
