Pine duBois honored with ELM Green Star Award |
 |
We are extremely proud to report that our very own Executive Director, Pine duBois, was honored with the Green Star Award by the Environmental League of Massachusetts. Awards were presented to five individuals who "have provided extraordinary leadership on behalf of the Massachusetts environment", and Pine was in the company of fellow awardees Mayor Thomas Menino, Marion Kane of the Barr Foundation, Rick Mattila of Genzyme Corporation, and Tedd Saunders of the Saunders Hotel Group. This "wonderful gathering of friends of the environment, and the largest environmental event of the year", was held at the LEED certified Boston Children's Museum on June 12, 2008.

Next High Tide Potluck Friday June 27, 2008 |
Now that it looks like summer may be rolling around soon, it's time to commence our biweekly High Tide Potlucks! This first potluck, on May 30th, was a lively celebration of the end of our annual 2-month Herring Count, as well as the first viewing of the art from our Herrings Count! Art Contest. And we sure enjoyed the music by Connected!
Join us for our next potluck on Friday June 27 alongside the beautiful Jones River for a lovely dinner out. The grill is hot by 6:00 pm and all are welcome. Bring something to grill for yourself, and maybe a side dish to share. Guests are encouraged to bring fishing poles, canoes and kayaks, as well as musical instruments.

A HUGE thank you to all of our fifty or so 2008 Herring Count volunteers! The unofficial count this year was exceedingly low: 105 fish in approximately 91 hours of counting over 2 months, little more than 2 fish per volunteer counter. Sad but important data, this will aid us in our work to restore the health and fish populations to the Jones River. Come to the Brad Chase talk on July 10 to hear more about what these numbers mean to the watershed.
In other unpleasant news, our fish count logbook disappeared from its storage box under the Elm Street Bridge on May 22. It has helpful auxiliary information that we would like to keep. If you have any information, please let us know at:

Update on the Jones River Fish Runs July 10, 2008 |
The end of May marked the end of our 4th annual Herring Count on the Jones River. What did we find? What does this data indicate? Brad Chase of Massachusetts Marine Fisheries will present information on the state of herring, smelt, and eel populations in the Jones River and what relevance that has on the state of health of the river. Those who have heard Brad speak before know that his presentations are well-informed and interesting. All are welcome to join. The talk will begin at 7pm.
